A closer look at Humpback Oak’s boxset

This is by far one of the most interesting boxset concept and design I’ve seen – an honest and pretty heartfelt compilation of their old works*. As they explained in the notes, they wanted to show all the little details – the handwritten lyric sheets, the press pictures, gig photos and to do it in such a way that would involve the listener in the uncovering process, and you’ll see how it slowly uncovers in the photos below.

The boxset opens up to a view of Leslie’s old room (complete with ceiling fan and you can even spot a picture of a small lizard!) The ‘bed’ (a tiny box) contains the ‘album sleeves’ (tiny booklets), photos, a guitar pick and a lovely handwritten note on how this boxset came about. And beneath all of these are the CDs proper, wrapped using foolscap-like paper. All of which were individually assembled manually.

I think it’s always been a struggle for local musicians / bands in Singapore, and even more so in the 1990s I’d imagine, so I’m actually really happy to own a copy of this. They probably were one of the pioneers of the local music scene (unpolished as they would admit) – I didn’t know much about their music prior to this really, but just like what they did for the local music scene. And of course, am liking Leslie’s current band very much :)

500 copies of this boxset were released over the weekend and is currently exclusively sold at BooksActually (No. 86 Club Street) for S$70 – while stocks last.

*They disbanded in early 2000s.
